Does the number of descendants of immigrants augment?
The immigration in France is an ancient phenomenon. At the beginning of the xxe century, 1 resident million immigrants in metropolitan France; in 1954, they are 2,3 millions and 4,2 millions in 1990. After a stabilisation in 1990s, the population of the immigrants advances once again: in 2008, 5 million immigrants live in an ordinary household in metropolitan France, that is 8 % populations, against 7 % in 1990. Among them, 2,7 million immigrants have between 18 and 50 years (that is 10 % populations).

In 2008, the children of the immigrants, that is to say the direct descendants of one or of two immigrant (s) are 6,5 millions, that is 11 % populations and 3 millions of them have their two immigrated parents. This estimate comes from three sources: the inquiry Trajectories and Origins (TeO) gives information over 18-50 years (sources); it is supplemented by the Inventory of the population for the miners and by the inquiry Job for most than 50 years.

According to inventories, the part of the immigrants in the French population advanced and the part of the miners living with at least an immigrated parent augmented in the course of the recent decades. The part of the downward adults of immigrants advances therefore probably, but this increase isn’t quantifiable. Indeed, a part of the children born in France in an immigrated parent won’t remain all his life on the French territory. Besides, there aren’t sources comparable to the inquiry TEO for last years.
